In February 2025, Arleen Velasco, BSN, RN, Staff Nurse III and Chair of the EBP and Research Council, partnered with Ashley Thompson-Brundidge, MSN, RN and Angelica Rincon, MSN, RN, NEA-BC, CNOR, to conduct a comprehensive literature search. Their review identified strong evidence supporting the creation of a local virtual journal club.
The virtual journal club now meets monthly to review current nursing literature, strengthen understanding of evidence‑based practice (EBP), and build critical appraisal skills. It also provides valuable insights into nurses’ perceptions of EBP and the journal club model. To support ongoing professional development, the EBP and Research Council has collaborated with the Nursing Professional Development team to offer participants one continuing education unit (CEU) for each session attended.
To increase awareness of the journal club and other EBP and Research Council activities, the team launched monthly “Coffee, Tea, and EBP” pop‑ups beginning in March. Held during shift changes, these informal sessions offer nurses a chance to learn about the journal club, sign up for future meetings, share suggestions for upcoming topics, and explore opportunities to participate in professional governance councils.
The pop‑ups, featuring coffee, tea, and treats, consistently draw strong engagement from nurses and other team members. Beyond refreshments, they create space for connection, collaboration, and the spread of new knowledge and resources across the medical center. Together, the journal club and these outreach efforts have significantly strengthened visibility, participation, and enthusiasm for the EBP and Research Council.
