Kaiser Permanente Santa Rosa earns prestigious Magnet® Recognition for nursing excellence

A Triumph in Nursing Excellence: KP Santa Rosa Becomes a Magnet® Designated Hospital

After four years of dedicated work, Kaiser Permanente Santa Rosa has achieved one of the highest honors in nursing — the Magnet Recognition® from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).

In late January, KP Santa Rosa became the first hospital in Sonoma County and the 56th in California to achieve this prestigious designation. Fewer than 10% of hospitals in the United States have received Magnet Recognition, widely regarded as the gold standard for nursing excellence, quality care, and innovation in nursing practice. It also recognizes organizations that excel in professional development, education, and nurse retention. KP Santa Rosa received a unanimous vote in favor of designation by the Commission on Magnet Recognition. The ANCC’s rigorous criteria requires hospitals to demonstrate excellence in quality outcomes, patient safety, experience of care, and nursing engagement. KP Santa Rosa’s application received nine exemplars — areas where performance exceeded Magnet’s already high standards.

Achieving Magnet Recognition was a hospital-wide effort, requiring collaboration across all disciplines. The process included extensive documentation, and a three-day site visit last fall by Magnet appraisers. The designation is valid for four years and must be renewed through re-evaluation.

The announcement event was filled with pride, gratitude, and emotion as hospital leaders reflected on the years-long journey. Gigi Gaytan, MSN, RN, NEA-BC, CNL, Magnet Program Director, shared how meaningful this achievement felt in light of the organization’s history. “To go from the devastation of the Tubbs Fire eight years ago to where we are today shows our team’s resilience and dedication to excellence,” she said. “Our nurses are involved every step of the way in improving patient care and outcomes.”

Matthew Yuen, BSN, RN, a medical-surgical staff nurse involved in the Magnet journey, echoed that sentiment: “Our staff go above and beyond to deliver personalized care for each individual. We put our heart and soul into every patient.”

The Magnet designation reflects not only the exceptional quality of nursing at KP Santa Rosa, but also the spirit of teamwork, compassion, and resilience that defines its caregivers and the community served.

In October 2025, KP Santa Rosa had the honor of walking the stage at the ANCC Magnet Conference held in Atlanta Georgia. 50 members of the KP Santa Rosa team were celebrated for the designation in front of the 13,000 attendees of the conference.
