From silence to success: How one team amplified the nursing voice

Nursing led strategic leadership revitalized RN engagement, achieving the region's highest survey participation.

Thomas Booth, BSN, RN, PCCN identified a challenge where not enough nurses were completing the “RN Excellence Survey,” a vital tool for gathering staff feedback. In 2023, only 44% of the nurses participated, which made it challenging for leaders to identify opportunities for improvement. To solve this, the team set a goal to increase participation to at least 80% in 2024 by creating a meaningful and engaging strategy that encouraged staff to share their voices. In 2025, the goal was to increase participation to 85%.

To achieve this goal, the team used nurses as Magnet Ambassadors to lead the effort and track progress daily. They motivated the staff through clear communication and positive incentives, including raffles, snack carts, and special themed events like Wellness Day. The latest results in 2025 show continued improvement, exceeding our goal for the year and achieving the highest participation rate in the Kaiser Permanente Northern California region at 86%. This project demonstrated that encouragement is an effective way to help nurses get involved in important hospital improvements.
