Advancing patient safety and clinical excellence

Empowering nurses with advanced skills in ultrasound guided IV insertion.

In response to a request from Emergency Department and Intensive Care Unit nurses, the Professional Governance Council identified a hospital-wide need to enhance inpatient nurse competency in ultrasound-guided IV insertion. To address this, the Professional Development Core Council, in partnership with ED leadership and trainers, launched a front-line–led, evidence-based training program in May 2025.

This initiative has significantly advanced patient safety, improved care efficiency, and strengthened coordination between inpatient units and the ED which ensures timely, high-quality IV access for patients across the medical center.

As of November 2025, 23 inpatient nurses had completed the training, providing coverage across all shifts and laying the groundwork for future expansion into Maternal Child Health, Perioperative Services, the Operating Room, and PACU. Program leaders are preparing a competency schedule to sustain proficiency and ensure ongoing excellence.
