Through engagement of critical stakeholders, the ICU Save our Skin team was able to improve patient outcomes. During a two-month period, they were able to reduce hospital-acquired pressure injury (HAPI) cases by 88.6% in their unit. ICU leadership, respiratory and wound care teams were all involved in the campaign alongside all clinical nurses in the ICU. Together they prioritized staff education and improved completion of the NCAL Pressure Injury Prevention module, increased attendance at the in-person wound 101 training class and provided reference materials on the unit as resources.
The team reinforced the pressure injury bundle and have steadily improved compliance of all elements since January 2025. They also worked to simplify workflows to maximize outcomes and increased opportunities for collaboration between the respiratory and wound care teams. They improved the bedside skin assessment practices with respiratory therapists and RNs and improved efficiency of referrals to the wound care team.
To continue sustainability the team is working to continue to prioritize education and training for all clinical nurses, provide information flyers on best practices and monitor compliance on the HAPI bundle. The team will share best practices with the Nursing Quality and Safety Core council to spread amongst all nursing units.
